Square 'em up and Happy Dancing!
John began square dancing in 1949 and started calling and teaching in 1968. John met his
future wife Gail while he was serving in the U. S. Air Force. They married in 1964 and moved
from Georgia to Tennessee where they resided for one year before moving to the Atlanta area
where they lived until 1997 when, following retirement, they moved to Florida.
CALLERLAB was formed in 1974 and John was invited to attend the convention in 1975 and has
been a member of CALLERLAB since that time. In 2000, the CALLERLAB Office relocated to
Florida. Gail was hired as office manager for CALLERLAB and later in the year John joined
the staff. Both Gail and John were presented the Chairman's Award for their dedicated and
outstanding service to CALLERLAB.
Mike Jacobs, Chairman, presented Gail with the Chairman's Award in 2004 and in 2008 Tim
Marriner, Chairman of CALLERLAB, presented the Chairman's Award to John.
No longer employed by CALLERLAB John was at liberty to run for the CALLERLAB Board of
Governors. In 2010 John was elected to the Board of Governors and will serve for a
three-year term beginning in April 2011.
Being a member of CALLERLAB not only provides a license from BMI/ASCAP to perform
copyrighted music, it also offers a wealth of knowledge and assistance in learning and
honing the craft of square dance calling.
John is caller for the Allemanders Square Dance Club in Satellite Beach and the Dixie Squares
in Daytona Beach Florida. He also travels throughout the South East for special dances and
events.
John joined the Florida Callers Association in 1997 and has been an active member, having
served as secretary, vice president and president of the association. John was also an
active member of the Atlanta Area Callers Association for 30 years, serving as president
and vice president.
